Kilnstones Wood

Walking into Kilnstones Wood near Kendal feels like stepping properly off the beaten track. It's a modest forest - nothing like the vast commercial woodlands you get elsewhere - but that's rather the point. The paths wind through mixed woodland with decent tree cover, and on a grey Cumbrian day it's genuinely atmospheric. You'll spot the occasional person with a dog, maybe a fell runner tearing through, but mostly it's quiet.

The wood works well as a short walk when the Lake District weather isn't cooperating. Two hours maximum if you're moving at a normal pace, so it's not a full day's commitment. Families with younger kids might manage an hour without complaints, though there's nothing particularly exciting here - no play areas, no visitor centre, just trees and paths. Older walkers and anyone after some woodland peace will find it satisfying enough.

It's ideal to pair with a stay at Kendal Camping and Caravanning Club Site, just 4.6 miles away, or push slightly further to Windermere Camping and Caravanning Club Site if you want better views across the water. The wood sits close enough to Kendal itself, so you're not completely isolated from shops and cafes. Bit steep in places and can get muddy after rain - proper fell country, really. Free to access, naturally, as these things usually are.
