Kilrenny Kanines

A working dog sanctuary just outside Anstruther in Fife, Kilrenny Kanines exists primarily as a rescue and rehabilitation centre for dogs. This isn't a tourist attraction with manicured grounds and gift shops - it's a proper working place where staff take in neglected, abandoned and difficult animals and get them ready for new homes.

You can visit if you've got genuine interest in the work they do, though it's worth ringing ahead to check visiting arrangements and whether they're open to the public on the day you're planning to call in. The main draw is seeing the dogs themselves - sometimes dozens of them at various stages of recovery - and understanding what goes into animal rescue. It's particularly good for families who want their kids to see beyond the cuddly pet narrative and grasp why adoption and rescue matter.

Since you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Kilrenny Mill is literally on the doorstep, or Silverdyke just across the way - it makes sense to add this to a morning if you're dog people. Anstruther itself is worth a proper visit for the fishing heritage and fish and chips, and the East Neuk coastal path offers far better value if you're after a walk. But if you're the sort who actually cares about animal welfare rather than just wanting a photo opportunity, this place has real merit. Don't expect entertainment - expect earnest, unglamorous rescue work.
