King Arthur's Cave

The cave sits high on the Doward hillside above Ross-on-Wye, and the walk up there is frankly better than what you'll find inside. It's a limestone cave with archaeological significance - Bronze Age occupation, Iron Age fortifications nearby - but honestly it's more of a stop-off than a destination in itself. You'll spend ten minutes poking about inside if you're interested in prehistory, less if you're not.

The real appeal is the location. You're looking out over the Wye Valley from a proper vantage point, and the woodland walk to reach it is lovely, especially in autumn. Park at Doward Park Campsite if you're staying there - it's just 0.2 miles away - and you've got an easy afternoon's circuit. If you're camping at Bracelands (1.8 miles) or Greenacres (3 miles), it's a reasonable leg-stretch without being too ambitious.

It's free to access and no set hours apply. Bring decent footwear because the slope is steep and can be muddy. Allow about an hour including the walk up and down, maybe longer if you're taking photos of the valley. Solo walkers and those interested in Iron Age Britain will get the most from it. Families with young children might find the scramble underwhelming - there's not much to do once you're inside the cave itself.

Treat it as part of a wider Wye Valley walk rather than a standalone trip. The river walks around Ross-on-Wye are the real draw for a camping holiday in this area.
