Kings Forest West Stow

Walk into Kings Forest West Stow and you're immediately surrounded by Scots pine and heather - proper woodland, the kind that makes you feel miles from anywhere even though Bury Saint Edmunds is just a short drive away. It's a nature reserve that rewards you for actually getting out of the car and exploring the trails rather than just snapping a photo and moving on.

The reserve itself is free to wander, which is brilliant. You'll find a network of paths through the forest where you might spot deer, rabbits, and the occasional buzzard if you're lucky and quiet. The heathland areas are especially good in late summer when the heather's flowering - otherwise it's a bit sparse and brown depending on the season. Allow a good two to three hours if you want to do the main circuit properly without rushing.

This works well for families with older kids who can walk a decent distance without complaining, and it's solid for anyone serious about birdwatching or wildlife photography. Younger children might find it a touch dull if there's nothing moving about - it's not a theme park, and the scenery is understated. Best visited in autumn or late spring when the light's interesting and there's actually wildlife about.
