King's Grave

Stone circles don't get much more atmospheric than this Bronze Age burial site perched on the slopes of the Mournes. King's Grave consists of a large cairn surrounded by a circle of standing stones, though exactly who the 'king' was remains a mystery - local folklore and archaeological evidence don't always align.

The site sits about a mile south of Newcastle, accessible via a fairly straightforward walk from the main road. History buffs will appreciate the monument's 4,000-year legacy, while the setting alone makes it worth the trek. Views across to the Irish Sea are properly spectacular on a clear day.

Families with older children who don't mind a bit of walking will find this more engaging than younger kids, who might lose interest after the initial excitement wears off. There's not a huge amount to 'do' here beyond absorbing the atmosphere and snapping photos.

Allow about an hour including the walk, though you could easily spend longer if you're keen on the history or just want to soak up those Mourne views. The site works well as part of a broader exploration of the area if you're staying at nearby Tollymore Forest Park campsite or one of the other holiday parks around Newcastle. Weather can change quickly up here, so pack accordingly.
