King's Hill

The walk up King's Hill rewards you with proper views across the Somerset Levels - that vast, pancake-flat expanse of water meadows and willows that stretches towards the Mendips. It's a modest climb from Glastonbury, nothing that will knacker you, but steep enough to feel like you've earned the vista once you're up there.

What you get is a working countryside hilltop, not some manicured tourist spot. There's no café, no visitor centre, no gift shop. Just grass, sky, and on a clear day, the chance to see why people got so worked up about this area centuries ago. The Tor dominates the horizon to the south - inevitable, unavoidable, frankly a bit of a show-off. But stand here and you understand the geography in a way you can't from down below.

Walkers will find it worthwhile, especially those basing themselves at one of the nearby glamping spots like Tall Trees or Old Oaks - both within easy reach. You're looking at under an hour up and back, which slots neatly into a morning before exploring Glastonbury itself. Families with competent children will manage fine; toddlers might find the push tedious. Historians will appreciate the layers of human settlement visible from up here, though you won't find plaques explaining everything.

Best visited in decent weather - mist renders it pointless, rain makes the path properly slippy. Spring and autumn are ideal. Free to visit, as it should be.
