King's Men stone circle

The King's Men is a proper stone circle - one of three related monuments scattered across the Oxfordshire countryside near Chipping Norton, and the most dramatic of the lot. You're looking at around 77 stones arranged in a rough circle, some standing proud, others slouching at angles that suggest they've been doing this for the best part of 4,500 years. It's Bronze Age stuff, genuinely ancient, and there's something about standing among them that makes you feel very small indeed.

What makes King's Men work is its accessibility. It's free, it's open all hours - no gates, no tickets, just walk straight up - and you can cover it properly in 20 minutes or linger for hours if the mood takes. The stones themselves aren't enormous by Stonehenge standards, which somehow makes them more human, more tangible. You can touch them, walk between them, sit among them without feeling like you're breaking some precious rope-barrier rule.

Historynerds will want to make a pilgrimage. Families with young children will find it mildly interesting for a quarter hour, then they'll want lunch. Walkers will love it as a circuit - combine it with the nearby Rollright Stones for a proper morning on the Cotswold Hills. If you're camping at Cotswold Hills Country Park, barely two and a half miles away, or based at Chipping Norton itself, it's absolutely the sort of thing worth a detour. Not a blockbuster attraction, but genuinely worth the walk across a field.
