King's Wood

You'll find King's Wood just east of Colchester, a proper patch of working woodland that doesn't pretend to be anything it isn't. This isn't a manicured country estate or a managed nature reserve with visitor centres - it's a functioning forest where foresters still work the land. The walking's good though. Miles of paths thread through mixed woodland, and in spring the bluebells come in thick enough to make the whole place glow blue-purple. Summer's different entirely - dense green canopy, cool underfoot, the kind of place where you actually cool down on a warm day.

Walkers will get the most from King's Wood. Bring proper boots if you've had rain. The paths can get muddy and aren't always obvious, which adds to the appeal if you like a bit of navigation rather than following a manicured trail. You can spend two hours here comfortably or ramble for half the day depending on how lost you want to get. Families with younger kids might find it a bit samey after an hour - there's no playgrounds or attractions, just woodland.

If you're basing yourself at Polstead Country Park nearby, King's Wood makes an excellent morning walk before heading back for lunch. Admission's free, and there's no visitor facilities, so come prepared. Best visited spring through autumn. Winter's muddy and the paths vanish under leaf litter.
