Kinnersley Castle

The first thing that strikes you about Kinnersley Castle is how genuinely remote it feels, despite sitting just a few miles outside Hereford. What remains today is essentially the keep - a sturdy Norman tower that's been standing since the 12th century, watching over the Herefordshire countryside with the kind of quiet authority only old stones can manage.

It's a private residence, which means you can't exactly wander through the great hall or sleep in the bedchamber, but the exterior tells its own story. The red sandstone tower and the remnants of its fortifications are visible from the approach, and for anyone seriously interested in medieval architecture or Norman military design, it's worth the detour from Hereford to see how these early castles actually looked - no romantic towers, no sprawling walls, just functional medieval engineering.

History buffs will get the most from this one. Casual day-trippers might find ten minutes satisfying; walkers will appreciate it as a waypoint on routes through the Wye Valley area. The surrounding countryside is genuinely lovely, which partly compensates for not being able to get inside.

If you're based at one of the nearby campsites - Moorhampton is closest at just over 3 miles - Kinnersley makes a good morning or afternoon outing when combined with exploring Hereford itself or walking the local footpaths. Bring proper walking shoes; the approach can be muddy. Admission details are thin on the ground, so check ahead if you're making a special trip.
