Hereford

Three historic hills rise from the Herefordshire countryside around this ancient cathedral city, where black-and-white timber buildings still line medieval streets. Nash Wood Hill, Burton Hill, and Garnons Hill offer proper walks with views across the Wye Valley, while down in the town centre, the towering cathedral dominates everything else.

Hereford feels properly lived-in rather than touristy. The cathedral's worth an hour, especially for the Mappa Mundi - a medieval map of the world that's genuinely fascinating. But it's the surrounding countryside that really shines. Drive twenty minutes to Weobley and you'll find some of the finest black-and-white architecture in the country, plus the excellent Weobley Museum & Local History Centre tucked away in the village.

Walking enthusiasts will love Moorhouse Coppice and Kenmoor Coppice - ancient woodlands that feel wonderfully untouched. The Roman Catholic Church of St Thomas of Hereford sits quietly in town, while Garnstone Park House offers a glimpse of grand country living. For golfers, Herefordshire Golf Club provides a decent round with countryside views.

Getting here's straightforward enough - the A49 runs right past, and there's a railway station with connections to Cardiff and Manchester. It's proper border country this, with Wales just fifteen minutes west.

Staying at one of the nearby holiday parks makes perfect sense. You're close enough for easy cathedral visits and market days, but far enough out to enjoy the rolling Herefordshire hills and those lovely wooded valleys that make this corner of England so quietly special.
