Knockbain School

There's not much left of Knockbain School these days, but that's rather the point. The ruins sit quietly near Newtonmore in the Highlands, a one-room stone building that speaks volumes about rural Scottish education in the 19th century. You'll find it fairly easily if you know where to look - it's the sort of place locals know about but tourists mostly pass by.

The building itself is a solid piece of Highland architecture, with thick walls that have weathered a fair few winters. There's something oddly affecting about standing inside a schoolroom where children sat learning their letters while snow piled up outside. The windows frame the surrounding moorland rather nicely.

Historygetters will get the most from this one - it tells you something genuine about how rural communities functioned. Kids might find it interesting for five minutes, though there's not much to do once you've had a poke about. The walk over to it is pleasant enough, and if you're based at Invernahavon Caravan Park just down the road, it makes an easy half-hour detour on a walking day.

It's free to visit and there's no set opening hours - you turn up and have a look around. Don't expect interpretation boards or facilities. What you get is the real thing: a bit weathered, genuinely historical, and a quiet spot to think about how life worked up here generations ago.
