Walking into Lads Head Plantation feels like stepping into a proper working forest rather than a manicured tourist spot. The woodland rolls across the Cumbrian hillside near Grange-over-Sands with a mix of mature conifers and broadleaves - you get that satisfying sense of scale without the crowds you'd find at more famous Lake District destinations.

It's ideal if you're after a straightforward woodland walk without needing facilities or interpretation boards. The trees themselves are the attraction here - tall enough to create real shelter and atmosphere. The paths are decent underfoot, though conditions vary seasonally, so proper footwear matters. You could easily spend an hour or two wandering about, or just thirty minutes if you're grabbing a quick walk between other things.

Families with older kids who'll actually walk without complaining will get something out of it. Younger children might find it a bit samey after the initial novelty of "we're in a forest." If you're staying at High Haume Glamping - six miles away - it's worth combining with a proper fell walk or a trip down to the coastal paths rather than making it your main event.

The absence of visitor facilities means you need to be self-sufficient. No tearoom, no visitor centre, no gift shop. That's either refreshing or a drawback depending on your mood. Winter's probably best avoided unless conditions are dry - it can get pretty boggy. Spring through autumn, this is a solid backup plan when the weather isn't playing ball for higher-altitude walking.
