Lady Park Wood National Nature Reserve

Lady Park Wood sits just outside Ross-on-Wye and it's one of those reserves that rewards you for making the effort to find it. This is old-growth woodland, genuinely ancient by British standards - the kind of place where you walk among trees that have seen centuries pass. The paths wind through dense forest with proper character, and if you're into woodland ecology or simply want to escape the manicured parks circuit, it delivers.

The reserve manages itself with minimal intervention, which means it feels wilder than most nature reserves you'll visit. Fallen logs lie where they've landed, dead wood supports insects and fungi, and the whole thing has a slightly overgrown quality that some will find genuinely magical and others might find a touch too rough around the edges. There's something honest about that.

Walkers get the most from this one - bring proper boots and expect muddy sections, particularly after rain. The Wye Valley views across the border into Wales on clearer days are worth the trek. Allow an hour to ninety minutes to do it properly, not rushing. Kids will either love the scramble and the 'wild' feel or get bored quickly; there's no playground nonsense here, just woodland.
