Walking into Ladyhall Plantation feels like stepping into somewhere properly old. The forest sits just outside Annan in Dumfries & Galloway, and it's the kind of woodland that makes you understand why Scots planted these shelterbelts centuries ago - windswept, working countryside needs all the protection it can get.

It's not a manicured nature reserve with interpretation boards and car parks. What you get instead are forest paths threading through mature trees, quiet enough that you'll hear the wind properly. The trails are straightforward and free to access, which makes it ideal if you're camping nearby at West Moss-Side or one of the other sites within a couple of miles. Budget an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're the type to stop and listen.

This works best for walkers who like their scenery functional rather than showy, and for families with kids who are past the "carry me" stage. There's something genuinely peaceful about it - no crowds, no entrance fees, just trees and space.
