Savings Banks Museum

The Savings Banks Museum in Annan tells the story of something rather mundane that actually changed lives - the rise of savings banking in 19th-century Scotland. It's housed in what was the first savings bank office, opened in 1810, so there's a genuine sense of place as you walk through rooms full of ledgers, coins, and the paraphernalia of Victorian financial prudence.

You won't spend hours here - expect 45 minutes to an hour - but it's genuinely interesting if you care about social history. The exhibits show how ordinary people, previously excluded from banking entirely, could suddenly put money aside. There's something quite moving about that democratisation of finance, even if the building itself is fairly modest.

It's free admission and worth combining with other attractions in the area rather than making a special trip. Caerlaverock Castle is only a few miles south and far more visually dramatic if you're bringing reluctant teenagers. The museum works best for adults interested in Scottish economic history or anyone doing the heritage trail through Dumfries and Galloway.

If you're camping at Caerlaverock Castle Corner or Hoddom Castle, it's close enough for a rainy afternoon visit. The town of Annan itself is pleasant enough for a wander and a chip supper, but it's not somewhere you'd linger. The museum gives you proper context for understanding this corner of the Scottish Lowlands though - less famous than Dumfries itself, but quietly significant historically.
