Priestside Flow

Walking into Priestside Flow feels like stepping into proper wild Scotland without needing a four-wheel drive to get there. It's a designated nature reserve just outside Annan, where the landscape opens up into boggy moorland and native woodland - the kind of place where you might spot red squirrels or roe deer if you keep quiet enough.

The flow itself (that's the local word for bog) is the main draw here. The paths wind through heather and sphagnum moss, with views that stretch towards the hills. It's not dramatic or showy - there's no single viewpoint you'd frame for Instagram - but it rewards slow walking. Birdwatchers absolutely love it, especially in spring and autumn when migrating species pass through. Families with primary-school-aged kids do well here; the distance is manageable and there's genuine wildlife-spotting potential.

You'll want at least ninety minutes to do it justice, longer if you're serious about identifying what you're seeing. Bring proper walking boots because it does get boggy after rain - trainers won't cut it. No visitor centre, no facilities to speak of, so take water and pack a proper map.

It sits nicely with the nearby caravan parks - Hoddom Castle is less than five miles away - if you're doing a Dumfries and Galloway circuit. The reserve works best as part of a broader day out rather than a standalone destination, but if you're into quiet woodland and wetland ecology, it's genuinely worth the detour from Annan.
