Laird's Rig Wood

Laird's Rig Wood is a proper forest walk in the rolling countryside near Thornhill, offering the kind of quiet woodland ramble you'll struggle to find anywhere south of the Borders. It's a working forest with a mix of native broadleaf and conifer stands, crossed by various paths that range from gentle riverside strolls to more demanding hill tracks. The landscape here is genuinely interesting - you're looking at views across Dumfries & Galloway's rural heart, with the Nith Valley visible on clearer days.

This isn't a destination for those after manicured gardens or visitor facilities. There are no cafes, no car parks with amenities, just woodland and walking. That said, it's absolutely the place if you want to escape for two or three hours with a decent map and a sturdy pair of boots. Families with children old enough to manage uneven ground will get something from it; younger kids might find it a bit slow unless they're genuinely keen on spotting birds and wildlife.

The forest works brilliantly as part of a broader holiday around Penpont Holiday Park, just under four miles away. You could combine it with walks along the River Nith or explore other woodland in the area. Spring and autumn are best - the place turns damp and muddy come winter. It's free to access, though there's no formal infrastructure, so come prepared with waterproofs and a working knowledge of where you're heading. Allow at least two hours if you're actually walking properly.
