Lang Craigs Woodland Trust Woods

The woods stretch across a proper swathe of Argyll, managed by the Woodland Trust, and they're exactly the kind of place you can disappear into for an afternoon without seeing another soul. Ancient trees tower overhead, the paths wind through mixed woodland - oak, birch, and pine - and there's genuine peace here that you don't get at the more famous beauty spots. Walking through Lang Craigs feels like stumbling onto something locals actually use rather than a tourist trap.

It's brilliant for families who don't mind a bit of mud. The terrain is manageable for most ages, though you'll want wellies after rain - the ground gets properly boggy in places. History types will appreciate the old woodland management evident in the tree spacing and the occasional ruin tucked away among the growth. Serious walkers can spend two or three hours here easily if they explore the full network of trails.

You're just outside Milton, which means it pairs nicely with the holiday parks clustered around Loch Lomond - Loch Lomond Retreat and Lomond Woods are both minutes away and excellent bases. If you're staying at either, this is your go-to when you want woodland walking without the crowds at Ben Lomond or the Trossachs. Access is free and unrestricted, though the Trust's website will have updated information on any seasonal issues or maintenance work.
