Spateston Park

A quiet strip of woodland and grassland just outside Milton, Spateston Park does exactly what a local nature reserve should do - gives you somewhere to stretch your legs without faffing about. It's straightforward stuff: paths through trees, open fields, the sort of place where you might spot a buzzard or a roe deer if you're lucky and keep still.

Walkers will find it useful as a half-hour detour rather than a destination in itself. The reserve isn't vast, and there's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, so go in knowing you're getting fresh air and a bit of greenery, not a day out. It's free, which helps, and works well if you're camping at The Pods at Auchenhean six miles away and want to burn off some energy without driving far.

Best visited early morning when wildlife is actually moving about. Late afternoon works too if you're avoiding midday crowds, though crowds aren't really a problem here. Children get bored if you linger more than an hour unless they're genuinely into spotting birds and insects. The paths are manageable for most fitness levels - nothing steep or technical.

It's the sort of place that earns its keep as part of a broader day out in Renfrewshire rather than as a standalone trip. Pair it with a walk round Milton itself or head over to nearby attractions if you're spending longer in the area. Useful, free, and honest about what it is.
