Lavethan Wood

The woodland here feels genuinely wild - proper Cornish moorland forest without the manicured edges you'd find elsewhere. Lavethan Wood sits just outside Bodmin, and it's the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think, which is increasingly rare. The trees are dense enough to offer real shelter, and the walking trails meander through without being overly signposted or fussed over.

It's ideal for walkers who want something low-key rather than a managed tourist experience. Families with younger kids might find it a bit too open-ended - there's not much in the way of facilities or clearly defined routes, so you need to be comfortable just wandering. History buffs won't find much here except the forest itself, which has probably stood in some form for centuries. The peace is the real draw.

Bring your own entertainment, basically. No visitor centre, no cafe, no charge as far as I can tell. An hour or two is realistic before you've had your fill, depending on how much you enjoy just being among trees without purpose. The weather matters more than anywhere else - muddy after rain, grim in mist.
