Lean Low

Standing at 550 metres, this modest Peak District summit delivers proper fell-walking satisfaction without the tourist crowds that swamp the bigger peaks. The climb from the nearest approach roads isn't particularly taxing - though you'll still work up a sweat on the steeper sections - and the views across the White Peak plateau make it well worth the effort.

Walkers and hikers will get the most from Lean Low, especially those staying at nearby holiday parks around Buxton who fancy a decent day out on the fells. It's not a mountain that'll test seasoned climbers, but families with older children should find it manageable enough for a proper adventure. The summit itself is fairly unremarkable - no dramatic cairn or viewing platform - but the 360-degree panorama takes in some lovely Derbyshire countryside.

Being open access land, there's no admission fee, though parking can be a bit hit-and-miss depending on which route you take. Allow three to four hours for a comfortable round trip, including time to properly appreciate the views at the top. Best tackled in clear weather when visibility's good - there's not much point slogging up here in thick mist.

For families based at places like Newhaven Holiday Park or Hartington Hills, it makes a cracking day trip that'll wear the kids out nicely before an evening back at camp.
