Rake Wood

Walk into Rake Wood near Bakewell and you're straight into proper Peak District woodland - the kind of place where the light filters through in that particular green way that makes you forget what time it is. It's a genuine forest rather than a manicured park, with decent paths winding through mixed trees and enough variation in terrain to keep things interesting without being exhausting.

The wood works brilliantly for families who've had enough of sitting in the car. Kids can splash about if there's water (depending on rainfall), and the paths are manageable for most ages without needing specialist gear. Walkers get a real sense of being in the landscape rather than visiting it - no queues, no gift shops, just trees and soil and the occasional sound of a stream. The main appeal is the escape: Bakewell can be rammed with tourists, but head into Rake Wood and you've left that entirely.

Allow a couple of hours to do it properly rather than rush through. There's no entrance fee and no registration needed - it's just there. Spring's lovely when everything's budding, but honestly it's good any time you can walk.
