Lees Hill

Lees Hill sits just outside Skipton, offering one of those straightforward Pennine walks that doesn't demand a full day but delivers proper views across Lancashire if the weather cooperates. It's a modest summit - nothing dramatic - but the walk up from the surrounding farmland gives you a real sense of the Dales landscape without needing technical kit or serious fitness.

The approach is gentle moorland rather than steep fell. You'll pass through rough grass and bracken, spotting stone walls and the occasional farmhouse tucked into the valleys below. The actual summit is relatively bare, which means views aren't blocked by trees - on a clear day you can see across to the South Pennines. Walkers dominate here rather than casual tourists, though it's the sort of place families with primary school kids could manage without complaints.

Allow a couple of hours return from the nearest access point. It's free, naturally. October through April tends to be clearest, though mornings are your best bet for visibility any time of year. The wind can bite up here even when it's calm in Skipton itself.

If you're basing yourself at Thornton Hall Country Park just half a mile away, or any of the glamping spots dotted around the Ribble Valley, Lees Hill makes a solid morning outing before heading back for lunch. It's not a destination in itself - you wouldn't drive three hours just for this - but paired with Skipton's market and a broader Dales exploration, it fills a gap nicely in a walking-focused holiday.
