Linn of Tummel (National Trust for Scotland)

The River Tummel drops away in a proper dramatic fashion here, and the walk down to the waterfall is one of those Perthshire experiences that justifies the whole trip. You're looking at a short path through woodland - fifteen minutes or so - that opens onto a viewing platform where the river compresses into a narrow channel before tumbling down in a series of cascades. It's free to visit and managed by the National Trust for Scotland, so there's no faffing about with entry fees.

The best time is after decent rainfall when the water's moving properly. In summer, when the flow's reduced, it's pleasant enough but loses some of its punch. Families with kids will manage it fine - the paths are well-maintained and the whole thing takes under an hour if you're not lingering for photos. Older walkers should be aware there's a bit of climbing on the return leg, nothing mad but enough to notice.

You're staying close to Pitlochry if you've picked one of the caravan parks nearby - Faskally Woods is barely half a mile away, which makes this a proper easy slot into your holiday schedule. Combine it with a stroll around the main Pitlochry attractions or tackle some of the longer walking routes in the area if you're planning a full day out. The woodland setting means it's decent even in iffy weather, though the views improve dramatically when the sun's out. Worth the detour if you're in the area, though don't expect to spend all afternoon here.
