Little Auchenfad Hill

The walk up Little Auchenfad Hill takes you through proper Dumfries & Galloway farming country, where the landscape shifts from hedgerows to open moorland as you climb. It's not a dramatic peak by any stretch - more of a solid training walk than a fell-bagging adventure - but the views across the lowlands are surprisingly good once you're up there. The approach from Landis is straightforward enough, though you'll want decent boots if it's been wet.

This one appeals to walkers after a couple of hours without needing to drive for ages, and families who fancy a real hill without the slog of something proper steep. The surrounding area - with Criffel View and Marthrown of Mabie caravan sites within spitting distance - makes it ideal for a caravan holiday where you want a few walks on the agenda. If you're staying at Landis Farm CL or any of the sites dotted around the 4-5 mile mark, it's a decent morning out.

There's nothing to do once you're up there but soak in the views and have a flask of tea. No facilities, no cafe, nothing. That's rather the point. Allow two to three hours there and back depending on fitness. Go early if the weather looks dodgy - these lowland hills can feel exposed when the wind picks up, and there's no shelter on the summit itself. Worth adding to a park holiday itinerary, but don't expect drama.
