New Abbey Corn Mill

The thundering waterwheel at New Abbey Corn Mill is still the first thing that catches you - even when it's not turning, there's something captivating about the sheer engineering of the thing. Built in the 18th century and powered by the stream that cuts through the village, it ground oats and barley for local farmers for nearly two centuries. What you get now is a proper working museum where the machinery still functions, and on the right days you can actually see it operating - flour dust in the air, gears meshing, the whole lot working as it would have done 200 years back.

It's intimate rather than grand. You're not wandering around a vast complex - this is compact, which means you'll take in the main building and millstones in about an hour, maybe a bit longer if you chat to the staff or linger over how they actually processed the grain. Families with kids of primary school age will get the most from it, particularly those who find working machinery interesting rather than just looking at artefacts behind glass. The village of New Abbey itself is charming enough for a wander afterwards, and you're well-placed for the caravan parks dotted around - Criffel View and Landis Farm are barely a stroll away.
