Llecheiddior Stone Circle

You'll find this Bronze Age stone circle on the hillside near Talybont, three standing stones arranged in what archaeologists reckon is a ritual or burial site from around 4,000 years ago. It's not dramatic - no towering megaliths like Stonehenge - but there's something rather affecting about stumbling across it on a quiet Welsh hillside. The stones themselves are weathered and modest, which somehow makes them more real than the Instagram-famous circles further south.

Walkers get the most from Llecheiddior. It's genuinely worth the detour if you're hiking the hills around Gwynedd, and the approach through farmland gives you time to think about who dragged these things up here and why. You won't spend long at the stones themselves - fifteen minutes tops - but the views across the valley justify the effort. It's free to visit, obviously. No facilities, no crowds, just grass and ancient rock.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Shell Island is outstanding for families, and Hendre Mynach offers decent pitches - this makes a decent half-morning walk. Pair it with a longer ramble through the surrounding countryside rather than treating it as a standalone stop. Not for people wanting photo ops or interpretation boards, but exactly right if you like your archaeology windswept and a bit rough around the edges.
