Llyn Ffynhonnau

You won't find crowds at Llyn Ffynhonnau, which is rather the point. This small lake sits quietly in the Gwynedd countryside south of Caernarfon, the sort of place locals know and visitors stumble upon by accident. The water's a proper dark blue on clear days, ringed by low hills and rough grassland that feels genuinely remote despite being barely five miles from town.

What you actually do here is walk and look. There's no visitor centre, no cafe, no signposted trail - just the lake and the surrounding land. It's excellent for a slow morning ramble, particularly if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks like Coed Helen or Dinlle. The walk takes about an hour at a casual pace, depending which way you loop it. Bring binoculars if you're into birds; the lake attracts various waterfowl and it's genuinely quiet enough to hear them.

Historically minded visitors might be disappointed - this isn't ancient, isn't a ruin. It's a working reservoir, essentially, built for water supply. But that's exactly why it's peaceful. Families with young children might find an hour enough before boredom sets in; older kids who enjoy hiking will get more from it.

The best time is early morning or late afternoon, when the light hits properly and the place feels even more isolated. Park near the lake and go from there - no entry fees that I'm aware of, no fiddly arrangements. Just turn up. If you're staying at Morfa Lodge or Coed Helen for a week, this is the sort of spot you visit on a quieter day between longer excursions into Snowdonia.
