Loch a' Mhuilinn

A small loch tucked into the Highland landscape between Inverness and Loch Ness proper, Loch a' Mhuilinn is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for. It's a quiet freshwater loch - nothing dramatic, but genuinely peaceful in a way the bigger tourist draws aren't.

The walk in from the road takes about ten minutes through decent paths, and once you're there the water reflects the surrounding hills properly. It's not a destination in itself, frankly. An hour's walk and a sit-down by the shore, maybe a spot of fishing if that's your thing, and you're done. But that's rather the point - it feels untouched precisely because it isn't on anyone's radar.

Families with younger kids might find it a bit quiet and empty, but teenagers and walkers after a gentle morning will appreciate the lack of crowds. It's free, naturally, and there are no facilities to speak of - bring what you need.

If you're based at any of the nearby parks - Inver Coille or Loch Ness Holiday Park are both close - Loch a' Mhuilinn makes a solid morning diversion before heading out for something grander. It's the sort of place that reminds you why people move to the Highlands. Don't expect Instagram moments. Just expect quiet.
