Loch Fiart

The water here sits perfectly still most days, reflecting the hills like a dark mirror. Loch Fiart is a small, quiet loch near Oban - the kind of place you stumble upon rather than plan for, though it deserves a proper visit if you're staying at one of the caravan parks nearby.

It's less dramatic than some Scottish lochs, which is rather the point. You won't get crowds or tour buses. What you get instead is peace, and that's the whole appeal. The banks aren't dramatic or particularly wild, but there's something restorative about standing here watching the light change across the water.

This works best for people who actually enjoy quiet. If you need spectacle or a proper activity, move on. But if you're based at Tralee Bay Holidays, Seaview, Highfield, or North Ledaig - all within a few miles - a morning walk around the loch is exactly the sort of thing that makes a caravan holiday feel proper. You'll need perhaps an hour for a gentle wander, longer if you're the sort to sit and watch.

There's no visitor centre, no facilities that I'm aware of, and no admission charge. Just a loch. Sometimes that's exactly what you want when you're on holiday - somewhere to breathe without planning ahead. The beauty of being near Oban is you've got the busier attractions nearby if you need them, but Loch Fiart offers the opposite: genuine, unremarkable quiet.
