Loch nan Losgann

The water here is properly dark, almost black in certain light, ringed by proper Highlands terrain - low hills, bog, and patches of pine that feel genuinely remote even though Taynuilt is just down the road. Loch nan Losgann is tiny compared to Loch Awe nearby, which actually works in its favour. There's no visitor centre, no gift shop, no grand entrance. You just turn up and walk.

This is a spot for people who actually enjoy walking rather than people who think they do. The loch itself doesn't take hours to explore - you can circuit it in an afternoon if you're not dawdling - but the real appeal is the quietness and the feeling of having stumbled onto something that isn't marked on every holiday brochure. Fishermen know it well. Birdwatchers too. If you're after dramatic Highlands views and a café at the end, look elsewhere.

Getting here means leaving the main A819 near Taynuilt and heading up minor roads - that's part of the charm and partly why it stays peaceful. It's free, obviously, and open year-round in the way lochs are. Midges can be thick in summer, so May or September are better bets.

If you're staying at Fyne Glamping or Loch Awe Camping Pods, this sits nicely as a morning walk before heading to bigger attractions. By itself it's not a destination, but as part of a proper Argyll holiday it's the kind of place that makes the trip feel authentic rather than packaged.
