Loch nan Sgorthaich

The water here is dark and still, ringed by dense forest that rises steeply from the shoreline. Loch nan Sgorthaich sits just outside Inverness in the Scottish Highlands, and it's the sort of place you stumble upon rather than deliberately seek out - which is precisely why it works.

It's a proper quiet spot. No facilities, no visitor centre, no crowds of coach tours. Just a loch, the trees, and the occasional flash of wildlife if you're patient. The walk down from the car park takes ten minutes through mixed woodland, and the reward is a peaceful stretch of water that feels genuinely remote despite being barely two miles from Inverness.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's not a long circuit, but the forest paths reward a slow pace and a decent camera. If you've got young children, they'll find it atmospheric rather than thrilling - worth an hour maybe, not a full day. Photographers arrive early for the light filtering through the pines onto the water.

Free to visit, naturally. There's no charge for access, though you'll need to find a spot to pull over on the verge nearby. Come midweek if possible - weekends can get busy with locals.

If you're camping at Loch Ness Holiday Park or Inver Coille just down the road, this makes an easy morning outing before heading to the main loch. It's the quieter alternative when you want woodland and water without the Nessie circus.
