Lochan a`Chuirn

A small freshwater loch just outside Oban that hardly anyone seems to know about. Lochan a'Chuirn sits tucked away in the landscape, offering a proper quiet spot if you're staying at one of the caravan parks nearby - Loch View Luxury Pod and North Ledaig are practically on the doorstep. The loch itself is modest in size but has that wild Argyll quality to it, with hills rising around it and decent views if the weather cooperates. Worth a walk around the perimeter if you've got an hour to kill, though don't expect dramatic waterfalls or Instagram-worthy vistas.

Walkers will get more out of it than casual visitors. The paths aren't marked to any great standard, so proper boots and a map are sensible. Families with young kids might find it a bit underwhelming after twenty minutes - there's no visitor facilities, no shops, no real attractions nearby except the water itself. In summer the midges can be brutal if there's no breeze. Spring and autumn are better bets.

The real value here is as a quiet breather during a caravan park holiday on the Oban side of Argyll. If you're based at Highfield Holidays or Tralee Bay and want to escape the camp for a couple of hours, this does the job. It's free and always accessible, though I wouldn't build a day trip around it. Combine it with walks to Oban town itself or trips further out to the proper Highland scenery and it becomes part of something bigger.
