About Long Spinney

A proper woodland walk through mixed beech and oak, Long Spinney sits just outside Hitchin and feels genuinely remote despite being minutes from town. The forest floor is thick with leaf litter, which makes for quiet walking, and in spring the bluebells come thick enough that you'd swear someone planted them deliberately. It's the kind of place where you actually notice bird calls instead of traffic noise.

The paths are well-trodden but not overly manicured. You get proper forest here - darker corners, plenty of fallen timber, the occasional boggy patch after rain. It's ideal for people who want a walk without the artifice of a formal nature reserve, though families with young children might find the uneven terrain a bit much after 20 minutes. Walkers and anyone after a bit of woodland solitude will get the most from it.

Allow an hour for a comfortable loop. There's no clear signage and no facilities, so decent boots and a bit of map sense help. The best time is late April through May when the light filters through fresh leaves, or September when the beech turns copper. Winter can be muddy. Free to access, of course.

If you're staying at Almshoe Glamping just down the road, this becomes an easy add-on to your day. Jacks Hill Caravans is a bit further out but Long Spinney still works as a quick morning walk before heading elsewhere. It won't take your whole afternoon, but that's rather the point.
