Lovers' Walks

The River Derwent carves through a proper limestone gorge just outside Matlock, and Lovers' Walks is where you get the best of it - a nature reserve that takes its name from the Victorian couples who used to stroll these paths. It's essentially a riverside walk through woodland, with the river on one side and steep valley walls on the other, all managed to protect the flora and fauna that thrive here.

You're walking on well-marked paths that wind through mixed woodland - nothing too demanding, though there are some hills to climb if you want to explore the upper sections. The river itself is the main attraction: it's genuinely lovely in places, and you'll spot waterfowl and fish if you're patient. Walkers will get the most from this - it's the kind of place where you can ramble for two or three hours and not feel rushed. Families with older kids will manage it fine; younger ones might find the riverside sections a bit limiting since you can't really deviate.

It's close enough to Matlock to pair with a wider Peak District holiday without eating up your day. If you're based at somewhere like Packhorse Farm or Barn Farm nearby, you've got a proper local walk that doesn't require the drive to bigger attractions. There's no charge to visit, which is always welcome. Early morning or late afternoon tends to be quietest - the summer weekends can get a bit peopley. Allow at least ninety minutes if you want to see the best bits without feeling rushed.
