Lower Bitcombe Wood

The woodland around Lower Bitcombe is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for - dense, quiet, and genuinely rewarding if you're willing to spend an hour or two properly exploring it. It's proper woodland, the kind Somerset does well: beech and oak overhead, a decent network of footpaths that aren't overtracked, and enough undergrowth to feel like you're actually in a forest rather than walking through a manicured park.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's not dramatic or showy - no ancient monuments, no dramatic viewpoints - but it's the real thing. Families with young kids might find it a touch dull after half an hour unless they're the type who'll stop to turn over logs and hunt for beetles. Birdwatchers and anyone after a quiet morning away from the Wincanton crowds will find it time well spent.

There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, which is part of its charm. Come in spring when the woodland floor is alive, or autumn when the light through the canopy is exceptional. Muddy paths are pretty much guaranteed year-round, so waterproofs aren't optional.

If you're based at Longleat Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite or Glamping on the Hill just down the road, this makes an easy morning outing - nothing requiring tickets or planning, just a solid walk in actual woodland. That's rarer than you'd think around here.
