Lyham Hill

The walk up Lyham Hill from Belford is straightforward enough, and on a clear day the views across Northumberland's rolling countryside are genuinely worth the effort. It's not a dramatic peak - nothing like the higher fells you'll find further west - but that's partly the appeal. The climb takes about forty minutes at a steady pace, and you won't find yourself scrambling or getting your boots muddy beyond repair.

This is walkers' territory, particularly those who want something manageable without sacrificing a decent outlook. Families with confident younger children will cope fine, though there's little to hold the attention of toddlers once you're at the top. The summit itself offers proper 360-degree views, and on windless days it's a cracking spot for a flask and a sandwich. Bring binoculars if you're into spotting buzzards or red kites.

Timing-wise, allow two hours return if you're not rushing. Spring and autumn tend to be best - less crowded than summer weekends, and the light is far more interesting. Winter can be wet and muddy underfoot. There's no visitor infrastructure at the top, so come prepared.

If you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - South Meadows is closest at under three miles away - Lyham Hill makes a solid afternoon excursion alongside exploring Belford itself and the wider Northumberland coast. It's the sort of walk that doesn't demand a full day but gives you enough to feel you've actually done something.
