Lymm Vale

Two miles of footpath wind around this former salt mine turned nature reserve, where the real draw isn't the small lake itself but the unexpected wildlife that's moved in since the flooding. Red deer graze openly here, which feels rather surreal given you're only minutes from Winsford town centre. The circular walk takes about an hour at a gentle pace, though families with young children might find sections a bit muddy after rain.

Birders will have the best time of it - little grebes and great crested grebes nest here regularly, and I've spotted kingfishers darting between the reeds on quieter weekdays. The boardwalk sections make decent viewing platforms, though they can get crowded with dog walkers at weekends.

It's proper countryside walking without the drive into the Peak District, making it a solid choice for families staying at nearby Delamere Lake Sailing & Holiday Park or Wild Shore Delamere. The paths connect to longer routes through Delamere Forest if you fancy extending the walk. Fair warning though - parking can be a nightmare during school holidays, and there's precious little signage once you're on the trails. Worth combining with a trip to nearby Blakemere Village for lunch afterwards.
