MacRobert's Reply Memorial

The MacRobert's Reply Memorial sits on a quiet stretch of Deeside near Aboyne, a modest stone cairn marking one of Scotland's strangest wartime stories. In 1941, three brothers from the local MacRobert family were killed flying RAF Hurricanes. Their mother, Lady MacRobert, was so determined to honour them that she funded the purchase of four replacement aircraft - a reply, quite literally, to the loss. The memorial itself is understated, which somehow makes the story hit harder.

It's the sort of place that rewards a pilgrimage rather than a casual drive-by. History buffs will want to make the effort, and anyone with an interest in wartime sacrifice will find it genuinely moving. The walk is short and straightforward, taking maybe fifteen minutes from the roadside, with decent views across the valley. Families with younger children might find it a bit sobering and brief for the trip - there's no visitor centre or facilities, just the cairn and the landscape.

Free to visit, as far as I can tell, and there's no timing pressure. Early morning or late afternoon light works best if you're photographing it. The memorial fits well into a Deeside loop from Aboyne - you could easily pair it with a night or two at Tarland Camping & Caravanning Club Site just a mile away, or use it as a detour from Firbank Park or Aboyne Loch if you're basing yourselves there. Quiet, respectful, and genuinely worth stopping for if you're in the area.
