The Green

The Green in Aboyne is essentially what it sounds like - a proper village green that doubles as a nature reserve, right in the heart of this Aberdeenshire settlement. It's a modest spot, but that's rather the point. You'll find open grassland, mature trees, and the kind of quiet you don't get in towns. There's a burn running through it, which means water voles and the odd kingfisher if you're lucky enough to spot one. It's free to wander around, and there's no time limit - stay five minutes or two hours, depending on whether you've brought binoculars or just fancied a stroll.

Who gets the most from this? Birdwatchers, definitely. Anyone after a gentle walk between other activities. Families will find it a decent break point if the kids need to burn off energy on grass rather than in a car. It's not a destination attraction - you won't spend a full afternoon here unless you're seriously into spotting common redstarts - but it's excellent if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks like Tarland Camping & Caravanning Club Site, which is barely a few minutes' walk away.

Very much a local's spot rather than a tourist pull. If you're exploring the Deeside area and staying at Firbank Park or Aboyne Loch, pop in en route to somewhere else. On a quiet morning when the light's good and the grass is still wet with dew, it's rather lovely. Just don't expect Cairngorms drama - this is understated Scottish landscape, the kind you get when you actually live here.
