Tarland Trails

The mountain bike trails at Tarland cut through proper Scottish terrain - red granite hills, heather moorland, and pine forest that feels genuinely remote despite being minutes from Aboyne. You're looking at a network of singletrack routes that range from gentle forest loops to technical descents that'll test your nerve and your suspension.

This is absolutely a destination for serious riders. The trails are well-built and maintained, with genuine variety across the difficulty spectrum. Beginners won't feel completely out of place, but they're not the focus here - if you want easy forest loops, Cairngorm Mountain or Glenshee will suit you better. Families with younger kids might find the spectator appeal limited; unless everyone in the group rides, there's not much else to do while waiting around.

You'll want a full morning or afternoon minimum, longer if you're not on a tight schedule. The best light is spring through early autumn, though the trails drain reasonably well year-round. Tarland Camping & Caravanning Club Site sits right on your doorstep at just 0.2 miles, making this a genuine stay-and-ride proposition. Firbank Park and Aboyne Loch Caravan Park offer slightly more facilities if you're after something less basic.

Aboyne itself has shops and cafes, so you won't starve. The trails themselves are free to use - no fees, no registration required. Just turn up with a functioning bike and proper footwear. Given the proximity to the campsites and the legitimate quality of the riding, it's worth building a holiday around if you're a biker. Everyone else should probably look elsewhere.
