Maer Bay Court

Stone walls and crumbling foundations are about all that remain of this Tudor court house, but what a spot it occupies. Perched on the clifftops above Dawlish Warren, Maer Bay Court offers commanding views across the Exe Estuary that make the short walk from the coastal path worthwhile.

Built in the 16th century as a manor house, the ruins now consist mainly of partial walls and doorway arches. History enthusiasts will appreciate the setting more than the remains themselves - there's not a great deal left to see structurally. What makes this place special is the panoramic vista stretching from Exmouth across to the Haldon Hills.

Families staying at nearby Haven Devon Cliffs or Dawlish Sands will find it a pleasant detour during coastal walks, though young children might lose interest quickly given the limited ruins. The site works best as part of a longer exploration of Dawlish Warren Nature Reserve, which lies just below.

Access is straightforward from the South West Coast Path, and there's no admission fee - you're simply walking through what amounts to an atmospheric ruin in a spectacular location. Allow twenty minutes to explore and soak up the views. Early morning or late afternoon light makes for the most dramatic photos across the estuary, when the water catches the sun just right.
