Maitlands Wood

Walk far enough into Maitlands Wood and you'll forget you're only a few miles from Stroud. The trees are dense enough that even on a grey day the place feels alive - light filters through in patches, and there's proper woodland quiet once you're past the car park. It's ancient woodland, the kind where you notice moss on everything and the ground stays damp even weeks after rain.

This is a straightforward woodland walk rather than a formal attraction with visitor facilities. You won't find cafes or information boards - just paths winding through beech and oak, with clearings where families with younger kids can sit without going too far in. The terrain is easy enough for school-age children but uneven enough that toddlers might struggle. Most people do an hour here, maybe ninety minutes if you're in no rush and the weather's decent.

It works well as a break between the caravan parks nearby - Baldwin's Brook Glamping is excellent if you want upmarket facilities, or The Riverside at The George Inn if you prefer being near civilization. Apple Tree Park Holiday Homes sits somewhere in between. You could easily pair a morning here with an afternoon in Stroud itself, which has a proper high street and some decent independent shops.

Go on a weekday if possible. Weekends bring enough people to take the edge off the solitude, and car park space gets tight. Best visited in spring or autumn - summer can feel a bit muggy under the canopy, and winter makes the paths treacherous.
