Maze 52

Getting lost on purpose sounds daft, but that's rather the point of Maze 52 near Ashbourne. It's a proper maze - the kind where you actually have to think about which path to take rather than just wandering aimlessly. The layout isn't massive, so you won't spend hours genuinely confused, but there's enough to it that families with kids aged six upwards will genuinely enjoy working out the route to the centre and back.

What makes it worth a detour during a Derbyshire park holiday is that it breaks up the typical caravan routine without requiring serious planning. You're close enough to Ashbourne that it slots in nicely between settling into Poplars Farm or Carsington Fields and heading off to bigger attractions. The surrounding area is decent walking country if you want to stretch your legs properly afterwards.

Bring a bit of patience and maybe a sense of humour - mazes either irritate you or they don't, and there's no in-between. Younger children might need a hand, and teenagers will probably solve it faster than you'd like to admit. It's not a three-hour commitment, more of a forty-minute diversion if you're in the mood for something interactive. The whole appeal is that it's low-key and unpretentious. No themed music, no gift shop pressure, just a maze doing what mazes do. Perfect for a rainy afternoon when everyone's had enough of the caravan site.
