Madge Hill

Standing at 324 metres above sea level, this modest peak offers surprisingly far-reaching views across the Derbyshire countryside without the crowds that flock to the bigger hills. The walk up from the nearest car parking spots takes about 30 minutes through gentle farmland - nothing too taxing, though you'll want proper walking boots if it's been wet.

From the summit, you can see right across to the Peak District proper and down towards the Dove Valley. It's not Kinder Scout, but on a clear day the panorama takes in a good chunk of central England. Families with older children will manage the ascent fine, though toddlers might find it a bit much.

What makes Madge Hill particularly appealing is its accessibility from Ashbourne and the string of holiday parks around Carsington Water. You can easily combine it with a morning walk then spend the afternoon at the reservoir, or use it as a gentle warm-up if you're planning bigger hikes in the Peaks.

The hill doesn't charge for the privilege of climbing it, obviously, and there are no facilities at the top - just grass, sheep, and that view. Allow a couple of hours if you want to take your time and actually enjoy the scenery rather than just tick it off a list.
