Meall Odhar Mòr

The walk up Meall Odhar Mòr is straightforward enough - moorland rather than scramble - which makes it popular with hill-walkers who want a proper Perthshire peak without the technical faffing about. The summit sits at 654 metres and commands views across the Tummel Valley toward Ben Lawers, all brooding purple and properly wild. From Pitlochry, you're looking at roughly two hours up and the same back down, depending on fitness. Most people will allow three to four hours total.

It's the sort of walk that suits families with older kids or anyone keen on a half-day hill outing without committing to an Alpine expedition. The higher you climb, the better the views get - that's the rule, and this one delivers. The ground underfoot can be boggy in wet weather, so decent boots matter. If you're camped at Glengoulandie or Parkdean Resorts Tummel Valley Holiday Park - both excellent, genuinely 5-star sites within a few miles - this makes a cracking morning or afternoon addition to your park break. The car park at the trailhead is basic but functional. There's no fee and no facilities on the hill itself, so bring water. Weather changes fast up there, so waterproofs aren't optional.
