Walking into Melbourne Park, you're straight away in proper woodland - the kind where you can actually hear yourself think. This nature reserve on Nottinghamshire's doorstep is a refreshing antidote to the Nottingham sprawl, with winding paths through ancient trees and enough space to lose the crowds entirely.

The reserve itself is a working habitat rather than a manicured attraction. You'll find woodland trails suitable for most fitness levels, though the paths can get muddy after rain so decent boots aren't optional. Bird watchers tend to get the most out of it - the trees and clearings attract a decent variety, especially in spring and autumn migration seasons. Families with young kids can manage the easier routes in an hour or so, but if you're after a proper walk, allow two to three hours to explore without rushing.

What makes it worth the trip is how quiet it stays. Even on decent weather weekends, you'll find pockets where you're genuinely alone. The woodland edge opens onto fields in places, giving you those breathing space moments that remind you why you left the city.

If you're camped at one of the nearby sites - Holme Pierrepont is closest at just over four miles - Melbourne Park makes an excellent morning or late-afternoon excursion. Not a destination in itself, but absolutely the kind of place that tips a camping weekend from okay to proper restorative. Go when the light's good, bring binoculars if you're into birds, and don't expect facilities beyond the parking area.
