Methven Wood

A proper woodland walk about four miles south of Perth, Methven Wood is the kind of place that rewards you for getting out of the car without demanding much in return. Ancient oaks and mixed forest create decent shelter even when the Perthshire drizzle arrives, which it will. The paths wind through relatively quiet woodland - you won't battle crowds here - and it's popular with locals who know the place but rarely swamped with visitors. You can rack up a decent walk of an hour or two depending on which trails you take, or just potter about for half an hour if time's tight. The canopy is thick enough that it feels properly separated from the world, even though you're just a short drive from Perth town centre. Families with younger kids will find it manageable - the main paths are reasonably well-maintained and flat enough that pushchairs work, though muddier sections crop up after rain. History types might dig the old estate woodland feel, though there's not much interpretation on site. Go when it's not raining if you can, though the wood doesn't lose appeal in damp weather. It's the kind of place that slots in nicely alongside a stay at Luxury Hideaways just down the road - an easy morning stroll before heading elsewhere, or a gentle leg-stretch between bigger attractions.
