Two rivers meet here - the Tay and the Almond - creating something rather special in Scotland's ancient capital. Perth sits perfectly between the Highlands and the Lowlands, which explains why it feels both energetic and oddly peaceful at the same time.

The town centre buzzes with proper Scottish life. None of that tourist-trap nonsense you get elsewhere. Local shops still thrive on the high streets, and the farmers' market on Saturday mornings draws folk from miles around. Fair City, as it's known locally, earned that nickname centuries ago and it still fits.

Methven Castle dominates the countryside just west of town - a proper medieval stronghold that reminds you this area has seen some serious history. The archaeological sites scattered around tell stories going back millennia. Mill Pond and College Mill hint at Perth's industrial past, while places like Ruthvenfield and Pitcairnfield reveal much older secrets.

Getting here couldn't be easier. The A9 runs right past, connecting you to Edinburgh in ninety minutes or Inverness in two hours. Perth railway station puts you in the heart of things, with regular services south to the capital.

Staying at one of the nearby holiday parks makes perfect sense. You're close enough to nip into town for dinner or shopping, but far enough out to enjoy proper Scottish countryside. The River Tay offers excellent fishing, and those hills to the north start calling pretty quickly. Perth works brilliantly as your base camp - central enough for day trips to Stirling or St Andrews, but with enough character to keep you busy for days.
