Mildown Wood

Walking into Mildown Wood feels like stepping back in time. This ancient forest near Battle in East Sussex is properly atmospheric - the kind of place where you half expect to stumble upon a medieval settlement round the next corner. The woodland is dense and dark in places, with mature trees creating a canopy that blocks out most of the sky even on bright days. Paths wind through without too much fuss, though they can get muddy after rain, so decent boots are essential.

It's ideal for anyone who actually wants to walk rather than just stroll. History buffs will appreciate the fact this woodland has probably looked much the same for centuries - there's something grounding about that. Kids will enjoy it if they're the type to hunt for bugs and build dens, but it won't hold attention for more than a couple of hours if you're after theme parks or visitor centres. Allow a good hour to ninety minutes to do it justice without rushing.

No visitor facilities that I'm aware of, so come prepared - bring water and maybe a sandwich. The nearest proper amenities are in Battle itself, which is only a few miles away. If you're staying at Wheatfields Luxury Glamping nearby, this makes an excellent morning walk before heading back for lunch. It's free to access, which is the only way woodland this atmospheric should be. Not a destination in isolation, but absolutely worth fitting in if you're exploring the Battle area.
